Getting to Düsseldorf Airport

As the airport is a mere 9 km distance from central Düsseldorf, it is easy to travel to the airport by public transport, taxi and hire car or under one’s own steam. There are plenty of parking facilities for motorists to leave their car either long or short-term.

Getting to Düsseldorf Airport by Car

Major motorways link Düsseldorf to all parts of mainland Europe with easy access from all directions. Important German cities like Cologne Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen enjoy excellent links by road and via mainline trains with the airport.

The main motorway routes into Düsseldorf include the motorways A3, A44, A46, A52, A57 as well as the A59 motorway. Motorists travelling from the north or south, should arrive via the A3 motorway, or take the A46 if travelling from the east and west. The exit to Düsseldorf Airport is signposted on the connecting A44 motorway link.

All the major car rental companies are represented at both the domestic and international arrival halls. Customers can also collect a hire car in central Düsseldorf to get to the airport, where they can return the car to the rental service team.

Getting to Düsseldorf Airport by Bus and Coach

Two major bus companies cover the Düsseldorf area, namely Adorf GmbH and Bandroch GmbH. Most bus routes are connecting the airport with the city from the northern side of the Bahnhofplatz. The main bus station (ZOB = Zentraler Omnibus Bahnhof) can be found directly in front of the Reisemarkt travel centre at the main train station. The travel centre is near the metro (S-Bahn) station and the following Düsseldorf Airport us lines start their journey at this point: 721, 727, 760 and 823.

From the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) the best airport buses are Lines 721 and 823, which take only 22 minutes to get to Düsseldorf Airport from the city centre. It costs just around 2.20 Euros for a one way ticket. At Düsseldorf Airport the bus station can be found in front of the arrivals terminal.

From the main bus terminal in central Düsseldorf passengers can also take many European travel connections via long distance coach travel. Coaches will collect and drop off at this bus terminal. Major cities in Germany are equally covered from this bus station.

Getting to Düsseldorf Airport by Train

The train station at the airport is fairly new, having been inaugurated in May 2000. The ‘Düsseldorf Flughafen’ train station now provides up to 350 trains every day, which include regional, express, intercity and high-speed, long-distance InterCity Express (ICE) trains. More than 16 million passengers a year use the airport and many of them require onward travel to other parts of Germany.

The train station itself is ideally situated between the cities of Duisburg and Düsseldorf, two important business and commerce centres in this part of Germany.

Metro trains operate via the S-Bahn (underground trains). There is a separate metro station, where the S11 line transports passengers at frequent intervals throughout the day from the airport to Düsseldorf’s city centre.

Getting to Düsseldorf Airport by Sky Train

At the ‘Düsseldorf Flughafen’ station passengers can transfer onto the fully automatic Sky Train, which transports them to the departure terminal in record time. The trains run at a height of ca.10 meters above the airport complex circling a 2.5 km track.

The Sky Train has a capacity of more than 2,000 passengers via 5 trains that leave once every hour. From the wide panoramic windows passengers can enjoy the views of the airport complex. The Sky Train will stop not only at the car park, but also at the terminal buildings.
