Trains to and from Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL)

Out of Berlin’s three airports Berlin Tegel Airport is the busiest. Berlin is the capital and the largest city of Germany. Travellers planning to fly into or out of Berlin through Berlin Tegel Airport should be aware that the airport will no longer in operation as from 12th June 2012. In future all traffic will be shifted to Schönefeld at the new Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, which will become the only airport in Berlin.

The airport is located 5 miles or 8km northwest of Berlin. The Berlin city motorways, namely, the A100 and A111 north, connect the airport to the rest of the country and the exits are clearly signposted.

In view of the fact that a brand new airport is being built, there are no direct train services to and trains from Berlin Tegel Airport. But this does not mean that travellers have no alternative means of transport. There are different means by which visitors can get to Berlin Tegel Airport. There are taxi services and car rental facilities at Berlin Tegel Airport. Frequent bus services are also available.

Berlin Tegel Airport buses take travellers to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and to onward destinations in Berlin City.

The following buses connect the airport to the main train station:

JetExpress Buses: these are a fleet of extra long buses that have spaces specially designed for luggage. The JetExpress Buses stop only at the main stops. The JetExpress Bus X9 is the connection to Zoologischer Garten station. The journey time takes only 20 minutes. The train station is located at the heart of Berlin. The 128 bus will take 10 minutes to get to Kurt-Schumacher-Platz train station and 25 minutes to get to the Osloer Strasse- U-Bahn underground train station.

Visitors should be aware that the Alt-Tegel U-Bahn underground train station as well as the Tegel S-Bahn metro train station is not meant for Berlin Tegel Airport, instead they serve the district of Tegel in Berlin.

Tickets for any of the above the buses must be purchased prior to the journey. The tickets can be bought from the ticket machines at the airport. Tickets must be validated prior to taking the journey and there are special machines either at the airport, on the bus itself or at the main stops to validating the ticket.
