Getting to Berlin Tegel Airport

Berlin Tegel Airport is located in Reinickendorf, a suburb just 8km (5 miles) northwest of the city centre. Tegel is well connected to the city by motorways, namely the A100 (Autobahn/motorway) and the A111 north. Both have well signposted exits guiding visitors to the airport. The time zone is GMT + 1 hour (GMT + 2 hours from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October)

Taxi stands are just outside the terminal buildings and a typical journey from Alexanderplatz in the city centre takes just 15 – 20 minutes and will cost around 26.00 Euro. On average a taxi journey will cost around 20.00 Euro, depending on the starting point in Berlin’s vast metropolitan area. Getting to Berlin Tegel Airport using the Jet Express Bus services numbers 128, 109 and X9, which also serve the main underground stations, is very cheap with a single journey costing as little as 2.00 Euro.

The journey time is between 30 to 45 minutes with the regular service and between 20 to 28 minutes with the express bus service. The bus services can be picked up from outside the metro station S-Bahn Jungfernheide, which is one stop from Jakob Kaizer Platz on the underground line U7. Getting to Berlin Tegel Airport is also easy from underground stops Unter den Linden and Französische Strasse, connecting to the underground U9 line at Turmstrasse and finally stopping at Alexanderplatz.

While getting to Berlin Tegel Airport is easy with such excellent infrastructure, it is also simple to get around Berlin Tegel Airport, as it is rather compact and well sign posted. Parking is amply provided for with both short and long term parking lots as well as valet parking. The main terminal A offers a small selection of souvenir shops, a bakery, a supermarket, and shops with guide books, maps and details on attractions in greater Berlin. Various cafés, restaurants and bars serve food and refreshments.

Berlin’s official tourist office at Berlin Tegel Airport serves tourists between the hours of 5:30 am to 11:30 pm daily. Passengers without pre-booked hotel rooms can book accommodation through the tourist office for a small fee.

The terminal also provides passengers with cash machines, which are located opposite gates 4, 10/11 and gate 15. Several banks and bureaux de change are also located in the main terminal building.

The main terminal building is part of the original Tegel airport. Terminal A is a hexagon-shaped ring concourse with a parking area, taxi stands and bus stops in the centre. The terminal has 14 fixed jet way bridges leading to 16 check in counters (Exits/Gates A00 to A15). Jet ways 1 to 14 serve two check-in counters each. As there is no transit zone, each gate features its own security clearance checkpoint and an exit for arrivals. From here there are no direct flight connections possible. The terminal also has a roof top platform for views over the runways and airport complex.

Berlin Tegel Airport Terminal B, nick-named the Nebel Hall in honour of spaceflight pioneer Rudolf Nebel, used to be a waiting area until it was converted into a temporary terminal building for check-in counters B20–B39.

Passengers should note that due to the imminent closure of Berlin Temple Airport there is no direct train or underground service available at the station. Getting to Berlin Temple Airport by public transport is easiest by one of the many busses serving the airport and the connecting main underground and train stations.
