Frankfurt Airport Arrivals (FRA)

Frankfurt Airport is situated a mere 12 km / 7.5 miles distance from downtown Frankfurt. The city has some of the best rail, air and road connections in the country with Cologne and Stuttgart, the two other important commercial hubs of this part of Germany being just a couple of hours’ drive away.

In 2010 nearly 53 million passengers were handled by the airport. Frankfurt serves 275 worldwide destinations in some 111 countries and is a base for some of the world’s best known carriers such as Lufthansa, United Airlines, British Airways and Cathay Pacific among many others.

Terminal 1 provides 56 gates for boarding and there are also three concourses with check-in facilities, shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and public toilet facilities. Terminal 1 also has two train stations, one is called Frankfurt Airport Regional station and offers onward travel into the city centre via metro trains S-Bahn S8 and S9, which run every 15 minutes and take only 11 minutes to reach the main train station and 15 minutes to reach central Frankfurt.

The second train station operates long distance trains to major German cities and neighbouring countries. InterCity Express high speed trains at the Frankfurt Airport long-distance train station use the super fast Cologne-Frankfurt rail network to take arrivals at Frankfurt Airport to Cologne, Bremen and Hamburg as well as Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.

Terminal 2 has two concourses with check-in and arrivals areas, shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. A continuous concourse connects the two existing terminal buildings and there is also a People Mover conveyor belt system that allows arrivals at Frankfurt Airport to get from their aircraft to the various areas such as passport control and baggage reclaim more quickly. Terminal 2 has a total of gates to 42 for boarding.

Frankfurt Airport arrivals have a great choice of onward destinations at hand. Flights to Vienna in Austria, Dublin in Ireland or London, Paris, Amsterdam or further afield to Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai or Tokyo beckon. Among other airlines Lufthansa has a fleet of the new Airbus A380 super-jets stationed here for long-haul flights. Frankfurt Airport arrivals can also board onward flight connections to domestic destinations like Berlin, Hanover or Hamburg.

Arrivals at Frankfurt Airport will find a selection of car rental companies have their rental desks at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Well known car hire suppliers such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, National, Alamo and Enterprise are open daily from 06.00 am to 11.00 pm for 365 days of the year. Motorways such as the A3, A67 and A5 lead directly to and from Frankfurt Airport, making onward travel by car fast, easy and convenient.

Arrivals at Frankfurt Airport can take a shuttle bus service from the terminal buildings to the various underground parking facilities for long and short-term parking. These buses leave Terminal 1 from the front of the B-Arrivals Hall. Tickets for this Airline shuttle can be purchased from the driver.

A number of other airline shuttle services leave for Darmstadt train station via the AIRLiner from bus 14 stop at Terminal 1 and from Terminal 2 at level 2; the bus stop is located roughly in the middle of the terminal building.

It is also possible to board a shuttle to Airport Frankfurt Hahn and this service can be boarded at Terminal 2 opposite Hall E. Frankfurt Airport arrivals can also avail themselves of hotel shuttles, which leave from the front of Terminal 1, A concourse, Level 1-Arrivals and Terminal 2, D and E concourses, Level 2-Arrivals. Most hotel shuttles operate every 30 minutes throughout the day.

A taxi rank is located just outside the arrivals area and the journey into the city takes only about 10 to 15 minutes to cover the 12 km into central Frankfurt during off peak hours, but at peak times it might take between 20 to 30 minutes to get to the city centre. Passengers travelling from the city centre to the airport should tell their taxi driver, which airline they are going to use for their departure flight.

The driver will drop off passengers at the correct check-in area according to the airline used. German taxis are typically white or cream coloured vehicles from the Mercedes Benz range. All licensed taxis carry a clearly displayed permit, have an illuminated TAXI sign on their roof and the name and contact details of the operator displayed on the sides of the vehicle.
