Frankfurt Airport Departures (FRA)

The distance between Frankfurt Airport and the city is just 12 km / 7.5 miles distance and departures at Frankfurt Airport can choose from some excellent public transport options to get from the city of Frankfurt to the airport in time to catch their flight.

Almost 53 million passengers chose to use the airport in 2010, confirming once again that Frank is the world’s ninth busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers. Frankfurt Airport offers 275 travel destinations in some 111 countries for onward connections.

Departures at Frankfurt Airport can use some of the world’s best known airlines for their onward journey. The airport is the base and main aviation hub for Lufthansa, Germany’s flagship carrier, an airline with a new fleet of Airbus A380 super-large jets to serve long-haul passengers.

At Terminal 1 departures are handled via 56 gates for boarding. Shopping, refreshments, toilets and first aid services can be found located in the three concourses A, B and C. Here passengers will find the check-in areas, too.

Frankfurt Airport Regional station is located underneath Terminal 1 and departures at Frankfurt Airport can take fast metro train connections from the city to the airport by boarding the S-Bahn at stations throughout the city. The metro trains S8 and S9, which run at 15 minute intervals and take only 15 minutes to get to the airport from locations in central Frankfurt.

A second train station, also located at Terminal 1, provides Frankfurt Airport departures with a link to major cities in Germany and some of her neighbouring countries. The InterCity Express trains use the high speed Cologne-Frankfurt rail network to transport departures at Frankfurt Airport from Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund or Düsseldorf and also link (via Cologne) into international rail networks with the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

At Terminal 2 Frankfurt Airport departures will find the two concourses D and E with check-in desks, shops, toilets, bars, cafes and restaurants serving local and international cuisine. The two terminal buildings are linked by a continuous concourse and a People Mover conveyor belt system that permits departures at Frankfurt Airport to reach their boarding gates in time. There are a total of gates to 42 at Terminal 2.

European travel destinations include, Berlin, Vienna, Dublin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Prague, Istanbul among others. Long-haul flights from Frankfurt Airport include Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai and Seoul.

Frankfurt Airport departures can hand back their rental cars at the end of the rental agreement to providers such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, National, Alamo and Enterprise, whose offices are open for business every day from 06.00 am to 11.00 pm at both terminals. Getting to Frankfurt Airport by car is easy thanks to motorway connections via the Autobahns A3, A67 and A5, all of which lead directly to Frankfurt Airport.

Motorists who need to park their car at the airport have a large number of parking facilities on offer, most of which are underground car parks with airport shuttle services transporting passengers from the parking areas back to the departure areas at the terminals.

Such shuttle buses stop at Terminal 1 in the front of the B-Arrivals and Departure Halls. Tickets for the shuttle can be bought from the driver upon boarding.

Frankfurt Airport departures can also avail themselves of a number of other airline shuttle buses, which leave from Darmstadt train station via the AIRLiner to reach Frankfurt Airport , where they drop off at the bus 14 stop at Terminal 1 and at Terminal 2 on level 2.

A taxi journey from the city to the airport takes just 10 to 15 minutes during off peak hours, but during rush hour it might take between 20 to 30 minutes to reach the airport. Departure passengers coming from Frankfurt city centre should inform their taxi driver, which airline will provide their departure flight and the driver will drop them off at the correct check-in area for the airline.

German taxis can be ordered via a central reservation desk and visitors should ask their hotel reception for the relevant companies to contact or consult the hotel manual typically displayed in the rooms. All licensed taxis have a clearly displayed meter in the front of the vehicle.
