The city of Frankfurt is located just 12 km from the airport, which has excellent motorway connections to all parts of Germany and its neighbouring countries.

The motorways A3, A67 and A5 take motorists directly from the city to the airport. The exits to the terminal access roads are signposted with an airport icon. The drive from central Frankfurt to the airport complex takes just 10 to 15 minutes during off peak travelling times and some 20 to 30 minutes during Frankfurt’s rush hour. Motorists can join the motorways A3 and A5 at the Autobahn intersection called Frankfurter Kreuz, a major hub for car travel into and out of Frankfurt city.

The city of Frankfurt is a vast urban sprawl and is in fact the largest city in the Federal State of Hesse. Its skyscrapers overlook the River Main, an important historic waterway for shipping and commerce. While modern skyscrapers dominate the skyline, the historic part of Frankfurt is well worth a visit. Here half-timbered, picturesque Römer Square is one of the city’s main tourist draws, especially since the Cathedral is located here. The Old Opera House at Opernplatz 1 and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange building are also favourites with visitors.

The city houses many wonderful museums and important art collections and some of the historic 19th century streets in Bornheim, Brockenheim, Sachsenhausen and Nordend are most charming in their almost complete depiction of what life in Frankfurt must have been like more than 100 years ago.

With such excellent road and train connections it is tempting to fly to Frankfurt Airport and use the city as a base for exploring more of Hesse and its neighbouring states of Franconia and Baden Württemberg. The historic cities of Mainz, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Würzburg and Karlsruhe can be reached with a fairly short drive.

The exciting city of Cologne with its world famous cathedral, carnival and many other attractions can also be reached by a one hour train journey on the InterCity Express fast train link. Parking in Cologne can be a problem, so going to the city by train or bus is advisable.
