Trains to and from Munich Airport (MUC)

Trains from Munich Airport run from underneath the Central Area / Zentralbereich. The airport is connected to the city centre and the main train station by metro trains (S-Bahn) that run at frequent intervals during the day.

S-Bahn services S1 and S8 travel every 10 minutes to the city centre and a single ticket will cost around EUR 8.80 for the 40 minute journey. After 9.00 am passengers can buy a day ticket (Tageskarte) for just EUR 16.00 allowing S-Bahn travel for up to 5 passengers travelling together.

S1 metro trains from Munich Airport will stop at Neufahrn, Moosach, Laim, Munich main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and Marienplatz, which is home to some of Munich’s most popular tourist attractions in the old part of the city. The service S1 carries on to Ostbahnhof (train station East), before returning to the airport. Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof allow passengers to join the main line and regional trains that connect Munich with the rest of Bavaria and Germany as a whole.

It takes around 45 minutes to reach the main train station and about 53 minutes to get to Ostbahnhof. Germany’s train stations are typically well designed and offer restaurants and snack bars, shopping facilities like bookshops or newsagents. The larger or main train stations also have travel centres, where passengers can make travel arrangements for onward long distance train journeys, including hotel accommodation.

A shuttle bus service runs between Munich Airport and the town of Freising, from where passengers can take trains into central Munich or to Nuremberg, Regensburg or other parts of Bavaria. It takes only 20 minutes to reach Freising, making it a good alternative to travelling all the way into Munich city centre for the main train station there.

It takes only a couple of minutes by Munich Airport train to reach the airport’s Visitor Park, Viewing Hill and information centre. It’s a great place to go and while away the time before the departure flight is due or just for an afternoon with the family, since the “children’s terminal” with its many interactive displays is always popular with little would-be pilots. The services S1 and S8 both stop at the Visitors’ Park.

For passengers, who are looking for alternatives to flights from Munich, such as intercontinental flights for example, there are fast trains to Frankfurt, which offers hundreds of flight routes to all parts of the world. From Munich main train station there are also fast train connections to Paris and Brussels.

German train ticket systems are complex and most unfathomable for Germans let alone tourists – it is therefore a good idea to ask at the information desk in the Central Area / Zentralbereich, what ticket one should buy for a particular purpose, since there are many different discounts on offer that can reduce train travel to just a small amount – even on long distance journeys. The “Reisezentrum” is a travel centre run by DB (Deutsche Bahn = German Railway), where passengers can find some amazing deals on train and coach travel within Germany and to some of its neighbouring countries. Especially during off peak season the DB Reisezentrum will have great discounts on train travel and hotel accommodation, when booked together.
