Hamburg Airport (HAM)

Germany’s Hamburg Airport is rated number 5 in terms of passenger number passing through the facilities every year. In total Germany has 16 major airports, but over the last few years, thanks to growing passenger volume, many smaller, regional ones have opened up.

Even though Hamburg Airport is the oldest aviation hub in the world that is still in operation, it has undergone huge change in recent times with new terminal buildings being constructed, additional runways, better parking facilities, several new hotels and shopping facilities being built to augment what was already there.

The airport offers domestic and international flights to more than 13 million passengers per annum. From here passengers can take direct flights to some thirty different locations across the planet. Domestic flight routes include cities like Berlin, Dresden, Munich and Frankfurt from where passengers can board a huge choice of inter-continental flights; Domestic and international flights are handled by different terminals.

There are two terminals at the airport, namely Terminal 1 and 2. The Terminal 1 building was only constructed in 2005, while Terminal 2 was inaugurated in 1993. The terminal buildings are very similar in design, layout and size. Constructed along eco-friendly lines, the airport’s architecture features many energy and water saving devices.

Hamburg Airport is situated approximately 5 miles / 8 km north of the city’s centre. A well sign-posted route takes motorists to the location using exit 23 of the A7 (expressway). The airport is located between the R2 and R3 ring roads on the (Bundesstrasse/ dual carriageway) B433.

The Airport also offers numerous options of public transport. Taxis are waiting at a taxi rank just outside of the terminal buildings. HVV city bus services connect the terminals with a number of city destinations. The airport is also connected to the metro train network and the S-Bahn route S1 links it to the central train station in the city centre (Hauptbahnhof).

Long and short-term parking spaces can be found in 6 car parks. Four of these car parks are within easy walking distance of the terminals. The remaining two parking garages are further away, but they offer cheaper parking fees, especially for holidaymakers. Valet parking is also offered at some of the parking facilities. Parking spaces can be booked in advance via airport’s official website. An intelligent indicator system directs motorists to the closest available parking lot saving air passengers precious time looking for car parking spaces.

Hamburg Airport also offers facilities designed for disabled passengers such as disabled toilets and passengers with reduced mobility can borrow wheelchairs, while in the terminal buildings. Services as wheelchair push, door-to-door transfer and assistance are provided for disabled passenger as part of their experience. The parking facilities for passengers with reduced mobility are clearly marked and the designated areas are typically in a location that makes it easy to reach the arrivals or departure areas.

Prior to departure disabled passengers should inform their airline and also the information desk located in the two terminals, if they require assistance during their time at the airport.

There is plenty of hotel accommodation close by and arrivals can make reservations from the airport office or get help at the information desks in the terminals.

The airport’s other facilities include a pharmacy, bars and restaurants, banks, ATMs, a bureau de change, pay telephones and many branded shops selling fashion, accessories, electronic goods, gifts, books and travel related literature, tourist guide books and maps.
